MAMELANI This amazing NGO has been a huge support for Earthchild Project since the beginning you could say they are like our big sister :-) Their areas of focus are health education and youth development and we have been successfully working together in both areas. Through Mamelanis Nonoza Education Fund, a social worker and youth counselor have been placed full time at our two schools. Children who are identified to be struggling due to lack of family support and financial security are supported through the programme. Material support such as uniforms, books and food parcels are allocated, along with parental support through emotional counseling, skills training and job placement. In addition many children received support through counseling and referrals. This programme has been hugely successful and of great support to our facilitators and the schools. Mamelanis dynamic and knowledgeable health and wellness facilitators have been giving cooking demonstrations at the Earthchild Teachers Retreats. Hugely informative, hand on and lots of fun, participants have enjoyed the demos, not the mention the delicious meal prepared in the process. Each retreat participant also goes home with one of Mamelanis fantastic low cost vegetarian recipe books, Imifuno for All.
KARMASHALA Our office is situated just beneath the KarmaShala Yoga studio and besides for the soothing OM sounds that drift down during their classes, we have benefitted from partnering with them in many ways. Firstly, some of their students have been volunteering at our school in Khayelitsha. Headed by our superstar volunteer, Inge, there are now over forty learners who do yoga once a week after school. KarmaShala have opened up their studio for us to use for workshops, yoga classes and documentary screenings. They also have special classes where all the proceeds go towards the project. Basically, we love KarmaShala and feel very blessed to be working with their lovely, generous, inspiring team of yogis :-)
ECO-SCHOOLS www.wess.org.za/index.php/Programs/Eco-Schools.html We have been working closely with Eco-Schools and their legendary Western Cape Coordinator, Janice April, since July 2007. Our two schools are registered Eco-Schools and in 2009 they both received the prestigious Green Flag award for work done in environmental education. In 2009, the 13 Green Champion Eco-Schools teachers were awarded with an Earthchild Project Retreat. For two days we hosted these exceptional teachers, giving them some well deserved pampering as well as running workshops in stress management, healthy living and other self development tools (See Teachers Retreats). With the support of Eco-Schools we launched our Classroom Worm Farm programme at four of their greater Retreat schools (see Classroom Worm Farms). We share a common vision and passion for working with children, teachers, schools and communities. We have great respect and admiration for the work Eco-Schools does and highly recommend their programme. URBAN
HARVEST So,
how do our gardens grow? With the friendly service we get from Urban
Harvest thats how By
hiring Urban Harvest to support our gardens at Sakumlandela and
Zerilda Park, they have helped us to design, set up and maintain our
veggie gardens according to the natural permaculture principles. The
best part is that during their weekly visits, our Garden Club
children are learning all they need to know to sustain the school
garden and set up their own edible gardens at home. Through the
perfect balance of Bens theoretical lessons followed by hands-on
experience, the children have become quite expert in the field. Through
the unique service Urban Harvest offers, you too can have a
beautiful, abundant vegetable garden at your home, business or
school. We love what they do and believe they are the bridge between
the present and how well all need to be living in the near future
- sustainably and in harmony with the environment, growing our own
chemical free, packaging free, nutritious food. |
